PhunkMob
February 19th & 20th

The PhunkMob (Malaysia) – a driving pulse with interplays of improvisatory rhythms
– is the brainchild of drummer John Ashley Thomas, whose credits includes working with Grammy award-winning flautist Nestor Torres alongside the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and also the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

John Ashley Thomas has also toured the prestigious Blue Note circuit in Japan with Motown legends “The Three Degrees” and played at the numerous jazz and music festivals around the world including Arts Alive! in South Africa, Hua Hin International Jazz Fest in Thailand, Taichung International Jazz Fest in Taiwan, Jazz Yatra in India, Mosaic Music Fest in Singapore, Month Kiara Jazz Fest, Penang Island Jazz Fest, Kuching International Jazz Fest in Borneo, Kota Kinabalu International Jazz Fest in Borneo, Chjimes Jazz Fest in Singapore, Genting International Jazz Fest and Jarasum International Jazz Fest in South Korea. John also toured with Taiwanese superstar A-Mei for her Star World Tour ‘08/09.

Most recently John took part in the Jarasum jazz competition in South Korea and won the ‘Special Jury’s Choice’ award.

The PhunkMob was formed in mid 2006 and boasts a stellar line-up of Malaysia’s finest young jazz musicians including TK on the keys, Fly on bass and Wan Gigi on guitars.

The PhunkMob will be showcasing mostly original material in the jazz, funk and neo-soul genre. They are currently recording their debut album, which is due to be released early this year.
