The Frankie Sixes
The Frankie Sixes is a new swing jazz band with some familiar faces from the Malaysian music scene. The unit was form specifically for lindy hop dancers in mind, practitioners of a kind of swing dance from the late 1940s. These dancers only dance to traditional swing jazz so most of the band’s repertoire will reflect that. Don’t be surprised if you feel like moving your body to the beat when you hear the band play!
The band is a side project of singer-songwriter Reza Salleh, an AIM award-winning musician with 18 years experience in the independent music scene. His debut album “Realize” topped radio charts in the year of its release and has led him to performances in Korea, Japan, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia and Singapore. Regional accolades include being invited to play one of the main stages at the 18th annual Sunset Live Festival, Asia Music Found Showcase and the Nakasu Jazz Festival in Fukuoka, Japan as well as being invited to the Jazz & Wine music series in Busan and the Daegu Folk Festival in Daegu, Korea. On local shores he’s appeared most major music festivals and has had his own showcase at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas.
The rest of the band consists of Ee Jeng on keys, a mainstay of the Malaysian jazz scene. He’s normally seen leading the 8-year-old Ee Jeng Trio, one of the few acts here with a repertoire of jazz originals. On double bass we have Che Wan, a fast-rising star in the scene and on drums we have KJ, usually seen holding it down for veteran jazz act The WVC Trio.
Expect to hear the likes of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and a lil’ bit of Sinatra thrown in for good measure. Be prepared to move your feet!
