BonaHop is a versatile Malaysian duo that plays various types of genres but focuses on Swing jazz music which composes of Grace Leong, a sought after female jazz keyboardist in town cum music lecturer of UCSI and Yvonne Chong, a vocalist and voice over talent.
These two were brought together at a gig playing pop, R&B and top 40s music in a tiny bar somewhere in KL while they make ends meet. They both soon discovered their shared interest in Swing jazz music (particularly New Orleans Style) and decided to secretly form a band together in hopes to improve and master their craft in Jazz. They wish to live their dream of performing on a foreign planet where glorious food is served and people partying like it’s the 1940’s to the good ol’ tunes of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and other greats.
As they continue to work on this passion project, their wish came true when they first debuted as BonaHop at Publika Jazz Fest 2017 as one of the main acts which became a big hit and caught the eye of a local Lindy Hop community which is a Swing dance community that dances to Swing Jazz music! Since BonaHop’s debut, they were invited to perform for Lindy Hop Swing dance events such as Tropic Thunder Swing Fest 2017 (an international dance camp held in Cyberjaya), KLSwing 10th Year Annieversary: Atomic Cocktail dance event 2018 and another international LindyHop workshop social dance party in March 2019. BonaHop has also been seen performing in various venues, events, themed-shows and weddings in Klang Valley as a duo or with their full band lineup over the past few years. Grace’s immaculate piano work and Yvonne’s captivating vocals brings to the audience their classic tunes of the Jazz era as well as fun renditions of chart topping hits of the 21st century.
Yvonne Chong made her singing debut on stage at the tender age of 7. A naturally musical person, Yvonne also plays an assortment of instruments ranging from piano to ethnic percussions. She also speaks and sings fluently in English, Malay, Chinese and Japanese. She is in an R&B band called Q Sound as a 2nd frontliner and has many project bands like Calico (a pop/top 40’s duo that expands to a full band), Von Torappu Torio (all girl acoustic trio), Vintage Vocals (a trio vocal group with rearranged pop tunes in a vintage area) and many more. She has also worked with Aubrey Suwito to do backup vocals for Jaclyn Victor, Dayang Nurfaizah, Francesca Peters, Froya, Airliftz and numerous local artists. Yvonne’s recent notable involvements in music festivals include Iskandar Music Festival 2018, Publika Jazz Festival 2018, Urbanscapes 2018 and Borneo Jazz Festival as the 2nd front woman for Q Sound & the 2nd line and backup vocals. Besides singing, Yvonne moonlights as a voice over talent and a makeup artist.
Grace Leong is a versatile and highly-experienced pianist who has been playing professionally for more than ten years. Grace has been travelling and performing wide range of music genres in festivals, hotels, on cruises and in pubs around Asia including Macau, Singapore and United States. Her musical style and repertoire include English, Chinese and Malay popular/classic tunes, J-Pop, Swing Jazz, Bossa Nova, Latin R&B, Soul, Slow Jam, Brazilian music and famous classical easy listening tunes. She was involved in numerous music festivals. Her most recent achievements was at Batam Jazz & Fashion (BAJAFASH) 2018 as a keyboardist for Zahid Ahmad Project in Indonesia, music director for Kirana Kay & The Groove Messengers in Iskandar Puteri Jazz Fest 2018, Miss Cosmopolitan 2018 & the 14th BOH Cameronian Awards 2017 as both music director and keyboardist just to name a few. She can also be seen playing in various music venues in Malaysia and works part-time a lecturer in Music at UCSI.
BonaHop, who share a common love for Swing jazz, Japanese culture, good food and good music is an amazing collaboration of musical talents that is guaranteed to make you knock your socks off and tap your feet along the great mix of old and new favourites.
